Erie County Quick Facts
Erie County Criminal History Records Overview
Erie County criminal records document the full arc of a criminal case through the county court system. These records may include arrest details, charges filed, preliminary hearings, arraignments, pleas, trial outcomes, sentencing, and any appeals. The Court of Common Pleas in Erie handles all felony and most serious misdemeanor cases in the county.
Records held by the Clerk of Courts are public under the Public Access Policy of the Unified Judicial System of Pennsylvania and the state Right-to-Know Law. Some records are shielded from public view. These include juvenile adjudications, sealed cases, expunged records, adoption matters, mental health proceedings, and grand jury materials. If a record has been expunged by court order, it will not appear in any public search.
There can be a lag between a court filing and when that entry appears online. Dockets on the UJS Portal may not reflect activity from the past 24 hours. For time-sensitive or verified information, contact the Clerk of Records office directly.
Note: Online docket sheets do not substitute for a certified criminal history background check, which only the Pennsylvania State Police can provide.

Court records in Erie County are public under the Pennsylvania Right-to-Know Law (Act 3 of 2008, effective January 1, 2009) and the Public Access Policy of the Unified Judicial System. Agencies must respond to written RTK requests within five business days. Failure to respond within that window is treated as a denial.
Certain criminal records are exempt from disclosure under Section 708(b)(16) of the RTKL. Under 18 Pa.C.S. Chapter 91, the Criminal History Record Information Act (CHRIA) governs how criminal background data is handled and who may obtain it. CHRIA sets rules for dissemination and permitted uses of criminal history information obtained through the State Police system.

Expungement of Erie County Criminal Records
Pennsylvania law allows some criminal records to be expunged under conditions set out in 18 Pa.C.S. Chapter 91. Common grounds for expungement in Erie County include summary offense convictions where the person has been arrest-free for at least five years, charges that were dismissed or resulted in acquittal, and certain arrests that did not lead to any conviction. Expungement petitions are filed with the Erie County Court of Common Pleas. After a judge grants the petition, the Clerk of Records processes the order and notifies the State Police.
The Pennsylvania State Police website at pa.gov/agencies/psp provides information on the expungement process, including forms and instructions for clearing a criminal background through the state system.
